Reflections on abstraction and realism in my work

Contemporary artist paintings

In my work, I explore the tension between abstraction and realism. This ongoing dialogue shapes how I approach the canvas. Sometimes, realism provides the foundation, giving the viewer a sense of familiarity. At other times, abstraction interrupts, shifting that comfort and asking new questions.

The contrast between the two creates a balance. I want my work to feel like it’s alive. That liveliness comes from not resting too heavily on one form. The balance isn’t always perfect, but that’s part of the search.

Painter artist website

As an artist, I work to connect ideas with visuals. My website provides a platform to share this exploration. My hope is that visitors—whether gallerists, collectors, or curators—can see this interplay in the paintings. The digital world offers access to my work, yet the physical presence of the painting cannot be fully replaced. There’s a tension here too, between the digital and the real.

This mirrors the push and pull of abstraction and realism. It is a reflection of today’s experience, where reality and digital abstraction exist together.

Painting art

For me, realism represents the known, while abstraction opens a space for the unknown. The contrast between them is not a conflict, but a conversation. Realism grounds us in what is familiar; abstraction invites us into a world of possibilities. This duality gives my work depth. It adds layers for the viewer to interpret and reconsider over time.

My process often involves painting over and reworking. In the end, this leaves traces of the earlier layers visible. These traces serve as reminders of the journey, much like how abstraction and realism overlap, leaving space for discovery.

Swedish contemporary artists

As a painter working in Sweden today, I am part of a broader conversation. The Swedish art scene, like many others, has its roots in tradition but continues to evolve. I see my role as contributing to this evolution, questioning what painting can be.

Swedish contemporary artists have always navigated these shifting tides. While my work is personal, it is also part of this larger context. I explore what it means to paint today, without clinging to any singular approach.

Site for painting

My paintings aim to communicate something beyond words. I want viewers to pause and look. Whether it’s the subtle hint of realism or the open-ended nature of abstraction, I aim to create moments of contemplation. This experience cannot be rushed or explained fully—it’s something to be felt.

On my site, I share these works, each holding the balance between two worlds. This space allows others to engage with the paintings at their own pace, to reflect on the tension that gives them life.

This post is part of my ongoing reflections as a painter. I continue to explore the intersection of abstraction and realism, and I hope to bring viewers along in that journey.
